Alternative Uses for RVs

More to RV Lifestyle than Camping

Summer is winding down and with it, for many people, traditional camping season. But that doesn’t mean you need to put your RV away for the rest of the year yet. There are many uses for recreational vehicles that don’t involve warm weather, camping, and vacations.

With your home away from home having so many amenities, recreational vehicles makes it the perfect vehicle for sports parties, business ventures, and pursuing your hobbies.

Tailgating

With football season in full swing, the tradition of tailgating is the perfect opportunity to get the most out of your recreational vehicle. RVs have long been considered the ultimate in tailgating luxury vehicles. Most major sporting events even have designated RV lots and pricing to accommodate almost any sized unit. Tailgaters love what an RV can add to the game day experience: a kitchen, bathroom, indoor/outdoor TVs and comfy spots to nap or just put your feet up after a long day of festivities.

Many die-hard fans even follow their teams from stadium to stadium all season long in their recreational vehicles. While the initial expense of owning an RV may seem high, RVers can actually save money tailgating by loading up the vehicle with tailgating supplies and saving on hotel costs by sleeping in their RV on the way.

Business and Advertising

In one of our previous blog posts, we discussed the possible tax deductibility of an RV as a second home. There are also a number of advantages to running your business out of an RV. For instance, you can save money on the brick-and-mortar expenses of having a physical location. This will lower your start-up expenses and you may be able to deduct any expenses related to running your business. You should consult with your personal legal or accounting professional or a tax specialist to find out exactly what is permissible under state and federal law.

In another business related area, RVs are a great advertising tool when decked out with your logos, brand and products. As the biggest vehicle in the lot, you’ll get great exposure and make a memorable impression. Plus, since your business is a rolling billboard, you can target exactly the crowds you want to attract. Some popular businesses being launched and run out of RVs these days are:

  • Antiques and Collectibles Dealer
  • Auto Detailing
  • Real Estate Office
  • Independent Sales
  • Sports Memorabilia Dealer
  • Construction and Service Businesses

Extra Living Space

The phenomenon of “boomerang” children, adults who return to the nest due to financial hardship, is more common than ever these days. Most parents are happy to help for a while but living in close quarters with adult children for extended periods can put quiet a strain on grown-up relationships. Some RV owners have found that turning their RV over to adult children serves two purposes: adding some much needed space and privacy between the adults and making sure the experience is not SO comfortable that the kids extend their stay indefinitely.
